Aussie mum fighting for life in Thailand after brutal fall on holiday

Jan 05, 2024

An Aussie mum is stranded in Thailand with a life-threatening injury after slipping and falling at a hotel bar, leaving her in a vegetative state in hospital.

Kylee Enright, 48, was on holiday with her husband Paul in the town of Khao Lak late last month, but a horrible fall on the way back from the bathroom "changed [their] lives forever".

The mum from Singleton, NSW, stepped off a wooden deck and fell about a metre, leaving her "bleeding from the head and ears". Her devastated husband believes she was expecting there to be steps but she "dropped into nothingness" instantly knocking her unconscious as she hit the ground.

"She was immediately rushed to the local hospital where she received life-saving treatment. They stitched her facial wound and intubated her," Paul said in a GoFundMe fundraiser. Kylee was then transported to a larger hospital where she has remained in a coma for almost two weeks.

Video footage shared by 7News shows the mum-of-three approach the edge of the deck before stepping off and landing on her head. It was at this point hotel staff notified Paul of the incident.

Kylee underwent brain surgery to remove part of her skull but there are still "no signs of Kylee entering consciousness", Paul said on Wednesday. The couple's three children have flown to Thailand to be by the mum's side with hopes to bring her home.

Paul is desperate to get his wife back to Australia where he believes she "will get the best care". So far, her hospital stay has cost the couple over $50,000, but will climb by about $5,000 each day she remains. To make matters worse, the couple's travel insurance won't cover her medical bills because alcohol was involved — a clause outlined in most policies.

"We are now having to foot the bill for the hospital expenses here which to date are totalling around $50,000 AUD, after already paying down a large sum," Paul said. The medical evacuation Kylee needs will set them back an additional $200,000, prompting a desperate plea from Paul and his adult children.

A GoFundMe has so far raised over $70,000 for the Enright family. "With each passing day the reality of her having a permanent disability increases, which will bring to the table further challenges and financial burden, however for now we just want to bring her home," Paul said.

Speaking to 7News, Paul admitted the family is "at a loss".

"It's very confronting to see their mother in a bed with tubes and her head shaved," he said of their children. "I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. We have absolutely hit a wall."
